Former WWE superstar Virgil has reportedly passed away at the age of 61.
The wrestling icon is believed to have suffered a series of strokes, having also battled multiple illnesses over the years. According to TMZ, his family announced his passing on Wednesday.
Virgil, whose real name was Michael Jones, played football for Virginia Union University before becoming a wrestler, having also competed in amateur wrestling and bodybuilding. He kicked off his career in the ring under the name “Soul Train Jones” in 1985 and was known for his time fighting alongside the late Rocky Johnson, the father of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, in the AWA.
He joined WWE in 1987, where he would debut as Virgil in a role as “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard. He became a fan favorite while in the role and would also form part of the iconic nWo at the defunct WCW.
Virgil wrestled full-time for another 10 years, making sparse appearances for various promotions between 2000 and 2020.
He also made appearances in several movies and TV shows as himself.
