It’s been reported that WWE was planning a lesbian angle for two of its hottest female wrestlers.
According to former creative writer Dave Schilling, the promotion considered pairing Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville up as kayfabe lesbians. Rose’s on-screen relationship with Otis from a few years ago ended up being a huge hit. But there’s no telling how the idea Schilling points to would have gone.
Speaking to Jeremy Lambert & Joel Pearl on In The Weeds, the former WWE employee discussed the company’s plans for the women’s triple threat match at WrestleMania 35 in 2019.
Schilling claimed that the original plan had Asuka defending the SmackDown Women’s Championship against Deville and Rose, after which the latter pair would share a kiss. They would then move forward as an item.
Deville likely wouldn’t have been completely put off by this as she is a lesbian in real life and just got engaged to her longtime girlfriend, Toni Cassano.
Schilling said he resisted the angle. And, though he might not have actually influenced the decision-making, the promotion opted to go in another direction as they put the belt on Charlotte Flair instead.

“It could have turned out poorly even though the best intentions were there, and they did want to make a good storyline Sonya and Mandy were involved and they were excited about doing it,” he explained. “At the end of the day, you have to do it right, and that would have been the wrong way to do it because you’re beating a babyface who people love, at WrestleMania, when there is so much complaint around how Asuka is losing.”
Rose is no longer with WWE as she was released last December. Deville remains with the promotion.
