Chris Benoit was a legend in the professional wrestling community over the course of his 15 years in the ring. In 2000, he married for the second time to a woman named Nancy who he would go on to have a child with in 2003.
She would file for divorce in the early years and even get a restraining order because of his violent behavior. Eventually, she would drop both the divorce suit and restraining order.
As far as his wrestling career, Benoit was reportedly missing a number of events scheduled to take place in June 2007, so the WWE requested a welfare check on the 40-year-old.
Authorities would soon find his wife wrapped in a towel, dead from asphyxiation. Their son was also found dead as well, appearing to be strangled. Benoit had placed a Bible next to each of their bodies.
Benoit was found hanging on a lat pull-down machine with a bible lying on the weight machine near his body. Investigators later determined that the murders and suicide were committed over the course of three days.
In the days following, an autopsy revealed that “Benoit’s brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.” Experts think his many concussions in the ring eventually led to the double murder-suicide.
