The Wrestling world has been plunged into mourning as one of WWE’s most legendary figures has passed away.
WWE Hall of Famer and former WWF World Heavyweight Champion, The Iron Sheik, has died at the age of 81. The unfortunate announcement came in the form of a statement from his Twitter account on Wednesday.
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling,” it reads. “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.”

The Iron Sheik, whose real name is Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, was an Iranian-born American who was a top-tier star in WWE in the 1980s and 1990s. He won the aforementioned championship, as well as the Tag Team Championship, one time each with the promotion.
He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.
