WNBA Superstar Brittney Griner Has Been Detained In Russia For Three Weeks Now Following Airport Drug Bust, Internet Prays For Her Safety (TWEETS)

This story is truly insane. According to several reports that are just coming to light now, WNBA star Brittney Griner has been detained in Russia for three weeks after she was busted with marijuana at the airport.

According to the Washington Examiner (via Russian outlet Lenta), Griner had arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport when she was busted by customs officials with “vaping equipment with cannabis oil cartridges.” Cannabis oil is illegal in Russia, and Griner could now be facing 5 to 10 years in prison.

Being stuck in Russia during these times is worrying enough, but the fact that she’s been detained for three weeks, and yet we’re only hearing about it now, is especially troubling.

USA Basketball has since issued the following statement on the matter:

USA Basketball is aware of and closely monitoring the legal situation facing Brittney Griner in Russia. Brittney has always handled herself with the utmost professionalism during her long tenure with USA Basketball and her safety and wellbeing are our primary concerns.
