The WNBA is set to introduce a new team to a new city.
The women’s basketball league continues to grow in popularity given its expansion drive and, according to Front Office Sports, will feature an additional team based in the Bay Area as of 2025.
“NEWS: The WNBA has officially announced plans for an expansion team in the Bay Area. ‘WNBA Golden State’ will share both the Warriors HQ in Oakland and the Chase Center. The franchise will begin play in 2025.”
Bay Area residents will have yet another team to support, with the Golden State Warriors having become a dynasty in recent years. The organization is keen on a similar impact in the WNBA and is looking to help the league grow, having received approval for an expansion side.
“We’re coming in here, number one, to win,” chairman Joe Lacob said, per ESPN. “Number two, we want to see this league and women’s basketball grow, and we hope to be a big part of it.
“We think it’s a watershed event for us to come in and commit to it in a big way. We’re going to bring all of our resources. We can put this machine to work, and we’re going to do that.”

Lacob added that he plans to handle the WNBA franchise with the very same methods as he does the Warriors and reckons it will become the most profitable team in women’s basketball.
“I believe we’ll have the No. 1 revenue of any WNBA team,” he said. “And I think we can do very, very well as a business because we know how to do this. We have all the facilities, and we can bring sponsor dollars to the team and ultimately to the league that will help the league in a big way.”
