The WNBA held its annual draft on Monday in New York City. Although this was a great day for many young, female athletes who finally reached their dreams of being drafted and going professional, the unfortunate incident involving Brittney Griner still looms over the basketball world.
Griner, a member of the Phoenix Mercury has been detained in Russia since February when she was caught at a Russian airport for possession of vape cartridges which contained hash oil. Russian authorities have recently extended her hold until at least May 19th. With the situation in Russia being very unstable right now, this is an incredibly scary position for Brittney. Her family, friends and fans all want her back home immediately.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert conducted a press conference and spoke on Britney’s unfortunate situation saying, “We continue to work diligently on bringing Brittney Griner home. This is an unimaginable situation for BG to be in. We are trying everything we can , every angle, working through with her legal representation, her agent, elected leaders, the administration.”
Unfortunately this was not the update that we were all wanting to hear. Hopefully the next time WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert addresses the situation, she will be telling the entire sports world that Brittney is finally on her way back home, something that is long overdue. Brittney is getting a ton of support from her fans on social media. Bring Brittney Home!
