President Joe Biden signed an executive order Tuesday that will greatly help Brittney Griner and others.
The order is aimed at increasing the flow of info to families detained overseas. it’s also aimed at imposing sanctions against criminals or government officials who hold those people captive, per the Associated Press.
“This [executive order] expands the tools available to deter and disrupt hostage-taking and wrongful detentions,” the White House said in a statement.
The presidential order comes as the administration is being criticized by some families for what they perceive to be a lack of innovation and tenacity in bringing their loved ones home.
For Brittney Griner, who has been imprisoned in Russia since February, this is really exciting news. At the Moscow airport, Russian investigators discovered hashish oil in Griner’s suitcase and detained her.
Griner’s lawyers told a Russian court last week that doctors in the U.S. prescribed the WBNA star medical cannabis two years ago for chronic pain.
