Ben Proudfoot had a message to get out about an American basketball player that everybody appreciated.
The Canadian filmmaker won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject on ‘The Queen of Basketball.’ In his acceptance speech, he called on President Biden to free Brittney Griner.
According to Russian authorities, Griner was arrested on allegations of smuggling significant amounts of a narcotic substance at a Moscow airport.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert told Insider the league was in contact with Griner’s agent and family daily.
“We’re in daily contact with her agent, her family, her legal representation. So it’s everybody coordinating on this and obviously we don’t want to do or say anything that is going to jeopardize her safety,” Engelbert said.
Griner, 31, won the 2014 WNBA championship with the Phoenix Mercury and is a seven-time all-star in the league.
