Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark had the perfect response to a reporter’s question about if she should receive an apology from Chennedy Carter over last week’s cheap shot from the Chicago Sky guard.
Last Saturday’s contest between the Fever and Sky marked the first WNBA meeting between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, who had a pair of memorable showdowns during their illustrious college careers.
Late in the third quarter, Carter delivered an unnecessary shoulder check on Clark after the former made a two-point basket. Officials issued a foul to Carter, but the WNBA upgraded it to a flagrant infraction after reviewing the play.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Caitlin Clark was asked if Carter owed her a public apology. But Clark took the high road and said it’s not at all necessary, noting that it was just a case of two athletes being competitive on the court, per Noah Trister of the Associated Press:
“No. I mean, basketball’s competitive. I get it. Sometimes your emotions get the best of you. Happened to me multiple times throughout the course of my career. People are competitive.
It is what it is, and she’s having a tremendous season. She’s played great basketball, in my eyes probably in first place for Sixth Player of the Year…There’s no grudges. There’s nothing like that. It’s a sport. It’s competitive. It’s not going to be nice all the time.”
Angel Reese received criticism for her ecstatic celebration on the sidelines immediately following Carter’s shoulder check on Clark. Both refused to apologize about the incident, with Reese stating that she’s fine embracing the villain role.

Caitlin Clark and the Fever went on to win the game 71-70, marking the end of their three-game losing skid. It was also their first victory on home court in the Clark era.
