Sports fans are even more worried about Brittney Griner after hearing some scary stories about what life could be like for her in the Russian prison colony.
Brittney Griner has been in Russian custody since February on drug charges as she was recently moved to a penal colony with brutal labor conditions. What makes things even more uncomfortable is it remains unclear which penal colony the WNBA star has been transferred to.
Unlike the prison system in America, women’s colonies are believed to be more dangerous. Life in the Russian prison colony is expected to be pretty rough, based on reports.
“Griner is ‘likely to be jumped in the bathrooms’ and hear ‘slurs no one ever should hear…The Russian government taught people long ago that Americans are the enemy of humankind,’” a report suggested.
Inmates in penal colonies face poor sanitation, food shortages, limited healthcare access, and even physical and sexual violence in penal colonies, according to the State Department.
Griner’s appeal of her nine-year prison sentence was rejected by the Russian government last month, and her lawyers said last week that she didn’t know exactly where their client was.

President Joe Biden said the US government has not ‘been meeting with positive response’ from Russia despite their continued efforts to free Griner.
The WNBA superstar may bring in the new year still stuck in Russia as the presidency continues to try and free her.
