Not only will Colin Kaepernick likely never play in the National Football League again, he likely won’t play in the XFL either.
While the average XFL player reportedly makes about $50,000/season, the top quarterbacks can make up to half a million dollars, according to ESPN. That is a problem for Colin Kaepernick.
Commissioner Oliver Luck revealed in a recent interview over the weekend that Kaepernick’s salary demands were “exorbitant.”
“We gave it some thought,” Luck told NPR’s Michel Martin. “We have some pretty significant salary restrictions, you know. We’re a start-up league, so we want to make sure that we can be fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent. And the, you know, salary requirements that some folks, you know, shared with us were in our case exorbitant, so we, you know, couldn’t go down that path.”
Kaepernick’s mere presence in the league would shoot ratings up even higher than they already are. Not to mention, whatever team he plays for at whatever stadium would be sold out by both supporters and people who are looking to see him fail.
The 32-year-old has been out of the league since 2016, and even though he had a very public workout with NFL scouts in attendance, he still remains unsigned.
“We spoke with his representative,” Luck added, “and the salary requirements that were broached in that conversation were exorbitant and certainly out of our range.”

Kaepernick reportedly asked for $20 million from the XFL last year, which would come out to about $2 million/game. He was also said to have asked for the same amount from the now-defunct Alliance of American Football league.
