Late into Thursday afternoon, it seemed the only league that was going to continue to play sports over the weekend would be the XFL. That decision finally came down as the league decided it would be in the best interest of everybody for the start-up league to suspend its inaugural season.
When the AAF collapsed in 2019, there were huge issues with players receiving payments, but the same thing will not be happening with the XFL. XFL commissioner Oliver Luck confirmed the 2020 season was coming to an end, but also that the league will pay its player salaries for the full season.
Given the setback, it seemed like the league would be dead on arrival, but Luck added that the XFL is “committed” to playing the 2021 season.
Even still, this was a huge blow to the league that put everything into this comeback, only to have a worldwide pandemic end it all.
