A former NFL coach, who should be trying his best to stay on his feet given his age, was involved in a bit of a scary incident this past Sunday.
Wade Phillips got another shot at coaching as the XFL returned this year and has impressed as his Houston Roughnecks have locked up the XFL South with a 7-3 record.
The 75-year-old built his brand as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, also working as a head coach therein. Earlier this year, he cited his age as the reason teams refused to give him a job in the NFL. But, based on what took place on Sunday, NFL teams might feel that notion was misguided as the old coach proved he can still take a hit.
Standing on the sidelines while his Roughnecks beat the Arlington Renegades, Phillips got bowled over by an onrushing player and lost his hat.
Given that he’s the XFL’s oldest coach and older than the oldest coach in the NFL, the former Los Angeles Rams DC should be protected at all costs; yet no one was able to get him out of the way in time when a group of players came charging in his direction.

He must have had fans worried for a second but got right back up and pumped his fists into the air to let everyone know he was okay.
If Phillips is young enough to get hit by a football player and not get hurt, he’s young enough to coach at the highest level in spite of his age. Maybe this incident will get the NFL to reconsider its stance.
