Williamson played one season of college basketball for Duke before entering the 2019 NBA Draft. He was drafted as the first overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans. He tore his meniscus during the preseason and could not start his rookie year until mid-January of 2020.
Despite missing some of the season, Williamson averaged 22.5 points with a 58.3 percent shooting average from the floor. He became the first rookie since Michael Jordan to post sixteen 20-point games within their first 20 contests.
Zion ended up suffering a Jones fracture in his right foot which required surgery and kept him out for the entire 2021–22 season. He signed a 5-year rookie contract extension with the Pelicans in 2022 worth $193 million.
