Taylor Heinicke played college football for Old Dominion before entering the 2015 NFL Draft. He was unsigned during the draft but signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent. After an injury caused him to be released, he signed with the New England Patriots, the Houston Texans, and the Carolina Panthers, but barely played.
In 2020, with the Washington Commanders, Heinike became the starting quarterback after Alex Smith suffered an injury in a playoff game. He started the majority of the 2021 season after Ryan Fitzpatrick suffered an injury and ended up setting the NFL record for the most completions by a quarterback in his first three starts. Heinicke also started the majority of the 2022 season after Carson Wentz suffered an injury, but was reverted back to the backup quarterback in Week 17.
