Rivera began coaching in 1997 as a quality control coach for the Bears. He then became a linebacker coach for the Philadelphia Eagles for two years before heading back to the Bears as a defensive coordinator in 2004. That same year he was nominated as Assistant Coach of the Year for helping Brian Urlacher be awarded the Defensive Player of the Year award. He spent three years with the Chargers before being hired for his first head coaching job for the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He became their all-time coaching leader in wins.
