Poyer was an avid athlete in high school. As a senior, he was named Oregon’s baseball player of the year and was drafted by the Florida Marlins of the MLB in 2009. He decided to focus on football while attending Oregon State. He was selected in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles and signed a four-year $2.2 million contract that included a $60,256 sign-on bonus.
Poyer was released by the Eagles after a short stent with the team and was picked up off waivers by the Cleveland Browns. After a few seasons with the Browns, Poyer was chosen by the Buffalo Bills as a free agent on a four-year, $13 million contract with $7.4 million guaranteed and a sign-on bonus of $3.5 million. He is the only NFL player to attain at least 5 interceptions and 3 sacks in 2021 and helped lead the Bills to finish that year with the league’s top defense.
