Deebo played for the University of South Carolina and was plagued by injury for most of his college career. He was selected 36th overall in the 2019 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. In his rookie season in the NFL, Deebo helped his team become NFC Champions and Super Bowl contenders. They, unfortunately, lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, however, Deebo’s 53 rushing yards were the most by any wide receiver in Super Bowl history.
His 2020 season was once again plagued by injury and COVID-19. In 2021, Samuel was named NFC offensive player of the week twice, and the 49ers began to line Samuel up in the backfield like a traditional running back. In 2021, he had more rushing touchdowns than 23 NFL teams, and he also holds the record for the most rushing touchdowns in a single season by any wide receiver in NFL history, with 8. At the 2022 Pro Bowl, Samuel coined the term “wide back” to refer to his interesting position.
In 2022, in a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Samuel suffered a knee injury while running the ball up the middle. Samuel attempted to walk off on the field, but he ultimately had to be carted away.
