Baker Mayfield is a quarterback in the NFL and currently plays for the Los Angeles Rams. The Cleveland Browns selected Baker Mayfield with the first overall selection in the 2018 Draft, and it didn’t take him long to become one of the NFL’s most controversial quarterbacks from that point on.
Baker’s heart is undeniable. He’s played through some brutal injuries during his first few seasons in the league. It’s his quality of play on the field and his comments in the media, however, which have caused many to turn on him—including the very team that drafted him.
Baker was stirring the pot even before his NFL days, though. From planting the Sooners flag at midfield following a victory over Ohio State, to his public intoxication and fleeing arrest, his time at Oklahoma was quite eventful, to say the least. And it all culminated with a Heisman Trophy Award in 2017, as he had a season for the ages down in Norman.
When you’re as outspoken as Mayfield, you’re bound to find yourself in the news more often than not. That’s why we have this page, to help keep you covered on anything and everything Baker Mayfield.
Baker Mayfield transferred from Texas Tech to the University of Oklahoma in 2014, and was not eligible to play until 2015 when he helped lead Oklahoma to the 2015 Orange Bowl. In 2017, he won the Heisman Trophy in his senior year and was drafted as the first overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2018 NFL Draft. He set the rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns along with ending a 19- game losing streak for the Browns. Baker Mayfield’s contract was a four-year, $32.68 million rookie contract.
In his first year with the Browns, Mayfield was considered a favorite for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, which was eventually given to Giants running back Saquon Barkley. In 2021, the Browns exercised the fifth-year contract option for Mayfield worth $18.9 million guaranteed. His 2021 season was plagued with a torn labrum and a right knee contusion. After week 17 he underwent surgery for the torn labrum. In the 2022 offseason, the Browns traded for quarterback Deshaun Watson, which ultimately led to Mayfield being traded to the Carolina Panthers for the 2022 season. He suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 5 and he requested a release from the Panthers in December. He was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams.
