What was seemingly an ordinary women’s soccer match between Rutgers and UMass briefly devolved into chaos when punches began to fly.
UMass player Ashley Lamond appeared to take exception to a foul by Rutgers’ Gia Girman, and all hell would break loose as a result.
Ashley Lamond could be seen running over to confront the Scarlet Knights forward but did not appear to like her doing so.
It did not take long for punches to be thrown, and Lamond was ultimately thrown to the ground with a vicious takedown before both were ejected.
Gia Girman could even be seen throwing an equally vicious punch to her opponent’s face as she struggled to get free.
Eventually, players from both UMass and Rutgers would run over to break it up before the footage would cut out.

When it was all said and done, Rutgers women’s soccer would drop a 1-0 final score at UMass at Rudd Field after the Minutewomen scored late in the 81st minute and held on for the shutout, per scarletknights.com.
With the victory, UMass improved to 11-3-1 in the all-time series dating back to 1985 when the schools were part of the Atlantic 10 Conference through 1994.
Rutgers will now return home to host Lehigh on Wednesday at Yurcak Field.
Due to that fight, there is no word on whether UMass player Ashley Lamond or Rutgers’ Gia Girman will be suspended for their next contest.
A school spokesperson informed ESPN that the athletic department was aware of the fight, but had no immediate comment.
