A pilot sustained injuries after the blimp he was flying crashed into buildings in Sao Paulo, Brazil, this week.
Blimps have become scarce in recent times, and there are thought to be around 20-25 flying in various parts of the world. One of them has since gone down in a Brazilian suburb, having taken off to promote the local soccer team, Sao Paulo FC.
The blimp, which had flown in from Carapicuiba, was floating around normally before suddenly taking a nosedive. You can see the moment in the video below:

Users on social media had some theories.
“I’d expect a lot of things, but definitely not a blimp crashing in the middle of the city,” one wrote. “In the video, you can see the elevators are set for a downward flight, so either the pilot was in a hurry to get to the ground (kidding) or there was some kind of technical malfunction.”
“I have personally flown one of the Budweiser blimps. It was as a guest passenger and took my turn as pilot,” someone else explained. “The elevators are controlled by large wheels on either side of the pilots chair something like wheelchair wheels they are clearly mechanically connected and not electrically operated when they move forward or rear, the same direction the elevators are operated down or up, when they are operated in contrary directions shifts the Rutter left or right. The notable thing in a blimp is that it only goes up or down in response to the motors driving the propellers, however a limpkin go down or crash by a loss of helium so that it loses buoyancy.”

According to TMZ Sports, the pilot was the only one injured as a result of the crash. He was rescued from the cabin and taken to the hospital. It’s believed that he will be okay.
The blimp had been rented out by the aforementioned Brazilian soccer team and took to the air for testing ahead of Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores quarterfinal against Botafogo. They were eliminated from the competition on penalties, with the blimp a portent of less-than-positive results.
Thankfully, no one else was injured.
