The USWNT has seen one of its stars suffer a worrying injury with the Women’s World Cup just over three months away.
The FIFA World Cup wrapped up in December, with Argentina winning the competition and Lionel Messi finally capturing that elusive trophy. The women’s version of the tournament is set to run from July 20 to August 20 this year, and the United States will go in as two-time defending champions after victories in 2015 and 2020. But they could be without one of their best players as Mallory Swanson was carted off the field during an international friendly against Ireland on Saturday.
The American forward was involved in two collisions during Saturday’s fixture, having already hurt her leg after running into her goalkeeper, Alyssa Naeher, earlier in the match. She later went down following an accidental kick from an opponent while trying to make a pass and was taken to the hospital with what was described as a “left knee injury.”

It would be a huge blow to the U.S. if Swanson is unable to participate in the upcoming tournament. She’s been the best player on the team this year, having scored seven goals in five appearances.

With the likes of Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe set to hand over the reins to the younger generation, players like Swanson, Ashley Hatch, Trinity Rodman, and Rose Lavelle will be relied upon as the USWNT looks to continue its winning tradition.
According to a recent update from Meg Linehan of The Athletic, Swanson has been diagnosed with a torn left patella, but the severity remains unknown.
It looks pretty bad for Swanson at the moment, but it’s hoped that she could be back in time for the tournament.
