Just unreal news to report as U.S. soccer journalist Grant Wahl died in Qatar while covering the World Cup, his brother announced. He was 48.
While covering Argentina’s quarterfinal win over the Netherlands on Friday, Wahl reportedly collapsed at Lusail Iconic Stadium and was rushed to a nearby hospital but passed away.
Wahl was married to Céline R. Gounder, an American infectious disease physician who served on the COVID-19 Advisory Board transition team for President Joe Biden.
Wahl was in the news weeks ago when he was kicked out of the World Cup stadium for wearing clothing in support of LGBTQ rights.
Wahl said he was detained and briefly refused entry to the match because of the “rainbow soccer ball t-shirt” he was wearing, posting on Twitter that security staff had told him: “You have to change your shirt. It’s not allowed.”
