Megan Rapinoe was playing in her final game in the NWSL Championship, as her OL Reign took on NJ/NY Gotham FC. It was supposed to be a joyous occasion that would hopefully end with her lifting the trophy during her final club match, but it came to an abrupt end for the USWNT legend.
Just five minuted into the game, Rapinoe was forced to leave due to a leg injury.
She limped off the field with tears in her eyes while the fans in attendance gave her a standing ovation.
The injury was said to be of the “non-contact” variety, which is never a good thing.
It’s been a rough year for Rapinoe during her farewell tour. During the summer, her United States Women’s National Team was ousted from the Women’s World Cup in the round of 16 following a shootout loss to Sweden. And now, this.
Probably not how she drew up the ending to what has been an otherwise historic career for the two-time World Cup champion.
