Megan Rapinoe’s distinguished soccer career lacked a storybook ending when she suffered an Achilles tendon in the early stages of a 2-1 loss to NJ/NY Gotham FC.
Rapinoe’s teammates were also soon thrown off course by the injury and the record attendance for an NWSL final was in stunned silence.
Following the contest, Rapinoe joked that her injury is proof that god isn’t real.
“I thought about it a little bit. I mean, I’m not a religious person or anything, and if there was a God, like, this is proof that there isn’t,” she said at the press conference following the game. “This is f—-ed up.”
The non-contact injury came about three minutes into what was billed as the last game of her illustrious athletic career.
The injury was bad enough but her comments left a sour taste in the mouth of many supporters and people who already disliked her to begin with.

Rapinoe, the winner of two World Cup titles and an Olympic gold medal, has advocated for equal pay for women’s soccer as well as transgender athletes in women’s sports.
It was earlier this summer when she said she would welcome a male-born athlete who identifies as female to take the place of a female soccer player.
Along with those types of comments as well as kneeling during the National Anthem, Rapinoe knows what it’s like to take heat from social media so I guess it was fitting her career ended in controversy.
