Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales has apologized for his surprising show of affection following the Women’s World Cup Final on Sunday.
Rubiales got the internet talking after he was seen kissing one of Spain’s players on the lips while they received their gold medals following a 1-0 victory over England.
The federation’s chief stood at the end of the line to congratulate the Spanish women and planted a kiss right on Jenni Hermoso’s mouth, also grabbing the back of her head.
The midfielder admitted she was not comfortable with the gesture. However, she still spoke up in his defense, insisting it was a spontaneous action brought on by the joy of winning.
Rubiales has since issued an apology.
“I made a mistake, for sure,” Rubiales said in a video on Monday. “I have to accept it. In a moment of such emotion, without any bad intention or bad faith, what happened, happened, in a very spontaneous way.”
