European fans are as passionate about their version of football as Americans are over theirs, even to the point that they’ll come out of hiding and risk capture.
This was the case after Italian Serie A side Napoli won their league title, known as the Scudetto, earlier this year.
A male fan was photographed on a balcony above a restaurant on the Greek island of Corfu. And it’s likely he regrets it now – or who knows, maybe it was worth it? Napoli hadn’t lifted the Serie A title since Diego Maradona led them to glory in 1990 after all.
The Washington Post has reported that the man on the balcony bore a striking resemblance to 60-year-old mobster Vincenzo La Porta, who has ties to the Camorra mafia and spent 11 years on the run after he was convicted of financial crimes in absentia.
Police were able to determine that the overjoyed fan was indeed La Porta. But he did not just allow himself to be taken in and attempted to flee on a scooter before being rounded up by Italian and Greek authorities.
La Porta, whose time on the run came to an end because Napoli’s barren run came to an end, could serve up to 14 years imprisonment in his home country, with Italian prosecutors working on extradition while he remains behind bars in Greece.
