The 2022 FIFA World Cup continued on Tuesday with Group B taking center stage. The United States held on to beat Iran 1-0 at Al Thumama Stadium in Doha. The U.S will play the Netherlands in the round of 16; Iran was eliminated with the result.
Usually, the fans would be distraught by the outcome of losing at the World Cup, but Iranians back home had a different reaction. As Iran continues to brutalize protesters and treat them less than humans, a ton of citizens hit the streets and began celebrating the World Cup defeat.
Many were dancing while others held the American flag.
There have been a ton of protests following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran’s morality police. Protests over the death of Amini, a Kurdish woman, have raged for weeks.

“I am happy, this is the government losing to the people,” a celebrator in a Kurdish region told CNN.
The players on the team showed they were with the citizens by not singing the National Anthem, but after they were informed their families were being threatened with torture and beatings, they made sure to sing before their match against the USA.
Unfortunately, a report says they may face arrest once they return to Iran.
“I’m really sorry on behalf of our players, our group, that we couldn’t get our opportunity to qualify for the next round,” midfielder Saeid Ezatolah told reporters. “I hope our fans and our people in Iran, they forgive us. And I feel just sorry, that’s it.”
The video above shows they are just fine with the results.
