Former USWNT star Carli Lloyd has discussed what’s gone wrong with women’s football in the United States following the country’s recent exit from the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The two-time defending champions have missed out on an opportunity to win three consecutive cups following a shocking loss on penalties to Sweden in the Round of 16 earlier this week. The exit marks the earliest the team has ever been knocked out of the competition.
Lloyd, who has been super-critical where the team is concerned in recent weeks, though she has backtracked on some of her statements, notes that the players and staff have been given a wake-up call following complacency setting in.
“It used to be that everyone feared the U.S. and the U.S. was always going in confident to these tournaments but I think when you win, it’s easy to get comfortable, the two-time World Cup winner and two-time Olympic gold medalist said during coverage on FOX. “I think this is a humble moment for the program, the players, for the coaching staff, and it’s a wake-up call for the entire program.”
The former attacker also pointed out that the country is failing at the developmental level with its Under-17 and Under-20 players.
