A Tennessee college athlete has tragically lost his life as well as two of his teammates being injured when they were struck by a driver while running in Virginia Thursday.
Milligan University sophomore Eli Cramer, a member of the Christian school’s track & field team, died in the crash, according to reports and the university. Seniors Alex Mortimer and Eli Baldy were also injured in the incident.
Cramer was just 20-years-old.
According to the TMZ Sports report, Jose Efrain Hernandez Mancia, the driver of the vehicle, allegedly attempted to flee the scene before crashing into a median. He was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the accident.
“He held a contagious energy that was integral to his team and our campus community,” the university said in a statement. “Please continue to pray for Cramer’s family as they begin to make sense of yesterday’s tragedy. Pray for our entire cross country/track & field team, their coaches, and our entire community.”
The 26-year-old driver was arrested and charged with DUI-first offense, DUI-involuntary manslaughter, reckless driving, one felony count of hit-and-run, DUI-maiming and refusing to submit a breath/blood sample.
