A former star athlete has been granted parole 10 years removed from killing his girlfriend.
Oscar Pistorius, a double-amputee paralympic runner, was found guilty of murdering model Reeva Steenkamp back in 2013 and has been in prison since 2014.
While at the height of his fame, Pistorius shot Steenkamp multiple times through a toilet door at his house in South Africa with claims he thought she had been an intruder. The news sent shockwaves around the world.
ESPN reports that the 37-year-old will be released from prison on January 5. Per the terms of his parole, he will not be allowed to leave Pretoria without permission from authorities. He will also perform community service and attend anger management sessions.
The conditions will be set for a period of five years.
“Parole does not mean the end of the sentence. It is still part of the sentence. It only means the inmate will complete the sentence outside a correctional facility,” Singabakho Nxumalo, a spokesperson for the Department of Corrections, said.
