American triathlete Seth Rider made quite the admission amid the 2024 Olympic Games, revealing he spent weeks without washing his hands.
Rider was aware he would have to get into the Seine River, which is known to have high levels of bacteria.
As he explained to The Athletic, he deliberately exposed himself to smaller doses of E. coli by not washing his hands to prepare his body for the filthy French water body.
“We know that there’s going to be some E. coli exposure,” he explained, “so I just try to increase my E. coli threshold by exposing myself to a bit of E. coli in your day-to-day life.
“And it’s actually backed by science. Proven methods. Just little things throughout your day, like not washing your hands after you go to the bathroom.”

Seth Rider’s Gross Practice Did Not Help Him Win, Ultimately
While such a method would not be doctor-recommended, Rider felt he needed to, given the concerns over the river’s cleanliness and the rainstorms over the weekend.
The French government attempted to clean the Seine, spending $1.5 million on the city’s sewer system.
Of course, that hardly means the river is clean, but the triathlon was greenlit and has since taken place.
Seth Rider finished 29th, but he will probably feel like his nasty trick was worth it as long as he doesn’t get sick.
