In today’s NBA, international stars like Joel Embiid stand out. Born in Cameroon and having lived in the U.S. since age 16, Embiid holds both American and French passports. When faced with the decision of which country to represent, he chose Team USA over Cameroon and France.
Embiid recently explained his decision to pick Team USA over France on Saturday after Team USA’s dominant win over Team Puerto Rico.
“It was a tough decision, but it is all about comfort level, and like I said, I’ve known these guys (Team USA players) for a long time, and I just felt more comfortable than on the other side (France). There was some concern with the other side. Comfort level was huge. I always say I’m going to be where I’m wanted, and these guys wanted me,” he said.
During Team USA’s Olympic games, the Philadelphia 76ers star faced boos and heckling from French crowds. Despite this, Embiid stood firm in his choice.
“At the end of the day, I think a lot of people think it’s hate. I see it as love and respect. If I wasn’t an OK basketball player, I would not receive that type of treatment, and so I see myself as being blessed, and that’s why I interact with them,” Embiid added.

Team USA clinched their third consecutive win in the Paris Olympics with a commanding 104-83 victory over Puerto Rico. This win secured the top overall seed in the medal round for the USA men’s basketball team.
Joel Embiid, who had concerns about Team USA’s star-studded roster, which primarily consists of players nearing 30 years old, found reassurance in Kevin Durant’s confidence. Durant’s support helped Embiid feel more confident in his role on the team.
