The U.S. Women’s hockey team is off to a hot start at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, winning each of their first two games by a combined score of 10-2. But it hasn’t been all good news for the defending gold medalists.
In their tournament opener against Finland, which resulted in a 5-2 victory on Thursday, star forward Brianna Decker was lost for the remainder of the games after suffering a brutal leg injury.
Midway through the first period, Decker had her legs taken out from behind by a Finnish player behind the next, causing her leg to bend in an awkward position. Both players appeared to be shaken up on the play, but it was Decker who clearly got the worst of it, as her screams of pain could be heard echoing throughout the empty arena.
Decker had to be stretchered off the ice and she was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament shortly after. However, she has stated that she plans to stay in Beijing to support her teammates for the remainder of the games.
She also took to Twitter to thank everyone for the support while posting a photo of herself and her new cast.
