Olympic gold-winning gymnast McKayla Maroney has finally returned to social media.
Maroney, part of the legendary “Fierce Five” at the 2012 Summer Games, returned to Instagram this week after a long hiatus and it had to do with her mental health.
Maroney stated she had been in survival mode since May 2023.

“I’ve been gone for a while because my health has been BAD!!” Maroney wrote in an Instagram story.
“Been in survival mode since last May really, so it’s been tough – but God has been with me, and he has delivered me from things I’m in awe over.
“It’s been a wild experience. Since January he’s been speaking to me 3/13 … 3/13 … 3/13 … I didn’t know what he meant or what he was going to do.
“God uses 13 a lot with me because my dad died on 1/13 – so it’s a meaningful number for me…
“Well – today was my first day back in the gym, since last September,” Maroney continued.
“Anyway – a month or so ago things with my health got EVEN WORSE!!!!
“I started having insane anxiety for no reason out of nowhere, it was like a two-week-long panic attack, adrenaline dumps, burning weird nerve pain.
“Plus weird histamine-type itching that I’ve been having since September. Not regular skin itching. It’s internal. It’s like I’m getting bit by misquotes [sic] all over. It literally hurts. Or like rubber bands snapped on me all night.
“I was already having severe insomnia so for two weeks[,] I didn’t sleep. I would just walk my neighborhood at 5 a.m. because it was so uncomfortable to be in my body.
“I had to do something. I was grateful if I fell asleep at 6 a.m.

“Well… drum roll I found out low iron, ferritin has been the cause of most [of] my health issues for the last year, but really since 2021.”
Maroney said that she cut high-histamine foods out of her diet and added a DAO supplement to assist in breaking down excess histamine, which has led to her getting some much-needed sleep.
Back in October, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist shared that she’s been dealing with “severe insomnia.” Maroney shared a carousel of photos, including some medical tests, a list of her symptoms, and texts with friends detailing her lack of sleep.
“I slept a total of 10 days out of 3 months. I’d like to say it was a nightmare, but you have to sleep to have nightmares.”
Maroney is almost as famous for her notorious “not impressed” meme as her gold medal, which she won with the United States in a team competition. She rose to fame during the 2012 Summer Olympics along with fellow gymnasts Gabby Douglas, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber, who were dubbed the “Fierce Five.”
Aside from that, she is also one of hundreds of gymnasts to testify against Larry Nassar, who was jailed in 2018.
