This is just quite odd.
During a women’s relay at a recent national track and field finals, a pair of Chinese runners went completely viral on social media and it had nothing to do with their performance, and everything to do with how they looked.
Liao Mengxue and Tong Zenghuan finished first and second places in 53.25 and 53.35 seconds in the 400-meter women’s relay at the National Track and Field Championships and Grand Prix Finals in Daqing, Heilongjiang province last week.
The pair have since had their gender called into question because of their appearance, with many people suggesting “they look like men”.
This is hardly the first time the pair has dealt with this controversy, as they came under fire at the July 2019 National Athletics Championships held in Shenyang. Liao Mengxue and Tong Zenghuan were part of the 4x400m relay that captured gold by almost three seconds.

Despite all the uproar, People’s daily spoke with the Chinese Athletic Association and they confirmed that Liao and Tong are women.
