Another day, another piece of Wayne Gretzky memorabilia selling for a jaw-dropping price at auction.
On Dec. 30, 1981, Gretzky tallied five goals in a win over the Philadelphia Flyers. Gretzky made history that night by becoming the fastest player to hit the 50-goal mark in a single season, needing just 39 games to do so.
The very Jofa helmet Gretzky wore that very night was auctioned off at Goldin Auctions, and it sold for $16,000. With a buyer’s premium add-on, the total fee for the special piece of hockey history was $19,200.

Bidding for the Jofa helmet started at $3,500 back on June 11. The winning buyer placed the winning $16,000 bid an hour before the auction closed.
Earlier this month, the jersey Gretzky wore for his final NHL game as a member of the New York Rangers (on Apr. 18, 1999 against the Pittsburgh Penguins) sold for $715,120. The jersey, which featured his autograph, set the record for the most expensive U.S.-based hockey jersey ever sold.
Known as “The Great One”, many consider Gretzky the best hockey player to ever live. A four-time Stanley Cup champion with the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky is the all-time leader in goals (894) and points (2,857). He also won 10 scoring titles (the Art Ross Trophy) and nine Hart Trophies, handed annually to the NHL’s most valuable player.
