If the Pittsburgh Penguins were to do the unthinkable and trade captain Sidney Crosby, they would unquestionably get a king’s ransom in return for the franchise star.
Should the Pens and Sidney Crosby put sentiments aside and focus purely on business, it only makes sense for the two sides to divorce sooner rather than later. Crosby is still at the top of his game at age 37, but the Penguins look like a draft lottery team with an ugly 6-9-3 start to the season.
Crosby signed a two-year extension before the start of the season that keeps him signed through 2026-27. If anything else, the contract security would only enhance his value on the trade market.
Every other NHL team would love to add Crosby to their roster, but let’s be real here. If he agreed to a trade, the three-time Stanley Cup champion would only want to play for a title contender.
That brings us to Nathan MacKinnon’s Colorado Avalanche, who are three seasons removed from a Stanley Cup championship. A healthy Avs team is the most dangerous in hockey, and that’s why they should be all-in on a Sidney Crosby pursuit.

Crosby and MacKinnon are close friends in real life. They have co-starred in several Tim Hortons advertisements and train together during the offseason. If there’s one team that could sell Crosby on the idea of a trade, it has to be the Avalanche.
The star-studded Avalanche will get captain Gabrel Landeskog soon and fellow star forward Valeri Nichushkin back soon. Cale Makar is arguably the best defenseman on the planet, and Mikko Rantanen remains a consistent 40-goal threat. Add Sidney Crosby to the mix, and the Avalanche would be the team to beat for the Stanley Cup in 2025 and beyond.
What Avalance Should Offer Penguins For Sidney Crosby
You’re looking at a king’s ransom for a player like Crosby. Not just because of his star power, but the fact he would enhance ticket sales, jersey purchases and television ratings.
With that said, the Avalanche should offer Nichushkin, center Casey Mittelstadt, 26-year-old blueliner Sam Girard, Colorado’s 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 first-round pick. That’s three stud playmakers and two early-round picks for an elite albeit 37-year-old center who could really slow down any day now.
