Funeral services are being held in Pennsylvania for Columbus Blue Jackets player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, and as sad as that is, it got even worse with the news that came from Meredith Gaudreau.
In an emotional and tear-filled eulogy for her husband, the widow of the Columbus Blue Jackets star revealed Monday that she is nine weeks pregnant with the couple’s third child.
Gaudreau said the week she found out about her third child was her “favorite week” of her life.
“We’re actually a family of five,” she said during Monday’s funeral. “I’m in my ninth week of pregnancy with our third baby. A total surprise, but, again, Johnny’s beaming and so excited. I was so nervous because, again, this was a total surprise, but his reaction was just immediately kissing me and hugging me even though I was driving the car.
Johnny Gaudreau and brother Matthew Gaudreau were tragically killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding bikes together last month.
“Noa, our oldest, hasn’t even turned two yet,” Meredith continued on Monday, per Sportsnet. “In less than three years of marriage, we’ve created a family of five. It doesn’t even sound possible. But I look at it as the ultimate blessing. How lucky am I to be the mother of John’s three babies? Our last one being a blessing and so special, despite these difficult circumstances.”
While this was somewhat good news, it was also devastating since Johnny would never meet the child he helped to create with his wife.

She added, “To my babies, daddy loves you all so much, and you have the best daddy in the world.”
During her tearful speech, Meredith also mentioned Johnny and Matthew’s parents, Guy and Jane.
“I’ve heard stories, and I know raising these two boys so close in age was no easy feat, but they were both family first always. I wonder where they got that from,” Meredith said with a smile. “I pray that my relationship with my kids will mirror the relationship you have with all four of yours.”
The driver charged in connection with the crash that killed NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew has been charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle.
Investigators say the brothers were on pedalcycles on County Route 551 when a Jeep Cherokee struck them they say was driven by Sean Higgins.
Driver Charged in Death of Johnny Gaudreau And His Brother Admits To Drinking
The driver who struck and killed NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew as they cycled along a New Jersey highway last month told police he’d downed ‘five or six’ beers before the fatal accident.
Authorities believe Higgins used the oncoming lane to pass a sedan and re-entered the right lane.
The collision went down after the SUV in front of Higgins moved to the middle of the roadway to safely pass the two cyclists, and Higgins attempted to pass the SUV on the right.
