The hockey world has suffered a horrible tragedy after the loss of Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew. Johnny was just 31 years old, while his brother was only 29.
Many fans worldwide have shown immense support for the Gaudreau family after the tragic loss of two of the sport’s brightest humans. The family has now made a statement on the death of their beloved member.
Johnny and Matthew’s uncle Jim posted to X to inform fans that the entire family feels and hears the love and support they are getting worldwide while also asking for the public’s respect and privacy.
The horrible news was made public after it was confirmed that Matthew and Johnny were hit by an assumed drunk driver while riding their bikes together in New Jersey after the driver attempted to overtake a slower-moving vehicle.
Gaudreau Family Thanks Fans And Teams For Support
The driver was taken into custody shortly after the tragic passing of the two hockey players and was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide. Sean Higgins was reportedly driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee after having had five or six beers and drinking more while he was operating the vehicle.

Gaudreau played 11 seasons in the NHL, nine with the Calgary Flames and the final two of his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He played in seven all-star games, nicknamed “Johnny Hockey” for his immense skill and love for the game.
