An enticing trade proposal has the Detroit Red Wings adding another young stud to their core in a move that could help them jump to Stanley Cup contender.
The Red Wings are coming off their best season in eight years, finishing with 91 points and only losing out on the final playoff spot via a tiebreaker to the Washington Capitals, who had more regulation wins (32 to Detroit’s 27).
Detroit has built up a dynamic offensive core led by captain Dylan Larkin, sniper Alex DeBrincat and young stars Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider. But with only four 20-goal scorers last year (Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat, and veteran Patrick Kane), it’s clear that Detroit could use one more quality winger to take this offense to another level.
A user at PuckPedia proposed a blockbuster trade idea that would see the Detroit Red Wings land 2019 second overall pick Kaapo Kakko and a 2025 fifth-round pick (via the Minnesota Wild) from the New York Rangers in exchange for veteran forward Andrew Copp.
Kakko has not reached expectations since entering the NHL as a highly-touted prospect five years ago. His best season came two years ago in 2022-23, when Kakko registered 18 goals and 40 points.

The Rangers are loaded with game-changing forwards, headlined by Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Chris Kreider, Vincent Trocheck and 2020 first overall pick Alexis Lafrenière and Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Adam Fox So there’s a case to be made that Kakko would benefit from a fresh start on a team that could give him an expanded role like the Red Wings.
Kaapo Kakko Could Break Out In Detroit
The Red Wings have two stalwart centers in Larkin and JT Compher with a promising Joe Veleno behind them. All three players can unlock the potential of a skilled winger like Kaapo Kakko, who would fit right in with an up-and-coming Detroit team loaded with speedsters and young talent.
