An intriguing blockbuster trade scenario has Connor McDavid being traded to the team he grew up rooting for.
The best hockey player in the world still has three years remaining on the eight-year, $100 million extension he signed back in 2017. He has cemented himself as the best player in the world, with five scoring titles and three Hart Trophies (given to the league’s most valuable player) since 2017.
There is zero indicator that McDavid wants a trade, and it would take an out-of-this-world offer for the Oilers to trade their captain. But what if a rival team out East issued the Oilers an offer that they wouldn’t be able to refuse?
HockeyPatrol.com proposed a massive trade idea that has the Oilers sending McDavid to his boyhood team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, in exchange for star forward Mitch Marner, top-four defenseman T.J. Brodie, promising 20-year-old forward Matthew Knies plus 2024 and 2026 first-round picks.
“The two main pieces in the deal would be McDavid, and Mitch Marner. Marner is one of the more underrated players in the league, and has emerged as one of the better two-way players in the sport. He’s arguably the best winger in the league at this point, and would be a great starting point for a McDavid deal…
This deal would shake the league to its core, but it could truly benefit both teams. Marner and Leon Draisaitl would combine to be one of the best two-way duos in the league, and McDavid tied to the hip with Auston Matthews would be truly magical.”
If the Oilers were to trade McDavid, and if they wanted players to help them win now, this would be a solid return for the best player in the world. Marner is a point-per-game player and would form a dynamic duo alongside fellow superstar Leon Draisaitl.

Knies has the potential to be a first-liner on a prolific scoring team like the Oilers or Leafs, and Brodie would shore up Edmonton’s blue line.
In all likelihood, however, McDavid remains with Edmonton for at least a couple of more years. If the Oilers fail to build a Stanley Cup team around him, however, McDavid could eventually seek a trade.
