The Stanley Cup Finals came to an end over the weekend with the Colorado Avalanche beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Game six to win their first cup since 2001. Tampa fell just short of becoming the first team in nearly 40 years to three-peat, after winning the previous two seasons.
Soon after the Stanley Cup was presented to the Avalanche, all the members of the team including players, coaches and trainers, gathered for the customary team photo. While skating towards his teammates with cup in hand, Avs forward Nicolas Aube-Kubel had an unfortunate fall that left the Holy Grail with a huge dent in its base.
There have been plenty of stories over the years of the Stanley Cup suffering damage over the Summer, as each player on the winning team gets one day with the Cup to celebrate with friends and family.
Colorado had a terrific season in which they broke a number of team records, and according to Phil Pritchard, Hall of Fame Employee and “keeper of the cup,” they also set the record for damaging the cup.

“I guess it’s a new record today. Five minutes into the presentation it’s happened. It’s the first time it’s ever happened on the ice.”
Colorado’s 23-year-old defenseman Cale Makar was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. It was the Avs’ first championship since 2001, and their third in franchise history.
