The National Hockey League has launched an investigation into claims Calgary Flames head coach Bill Peters called a black player the n-word while he was managing a minor league team 10 years ago.
Ex-NHL player Akim Aliu took to Twitter and accused the coach of hurling racial slurs at him, but did not go into detail. That all changed when he spoke to TSN and what he alleges was quite shocking.
“He walked in before a morning pre-game skate and said ‘Hey, Akim, I’m sick of you playing that n** shit,'” Aliu told TSN. “He said ‘I’m sick of hearing this ni–as f–king other n***s in the ass stuff.'”
Aliu added, “He then walked out like nothing ever happened. You could hear a pin drop in the room, everything went dead silent. I just sat down in my stall, didn’t say a word.”
TSN says it spoke with two of Aliu’s former teammates who corroborated the story.
Fast forward to Wednesday and Peters acknowledges using offensive language in dealing with a Nigerian-born player 10 years ago in the minors in writing a letter of apology addressed to general manager Brad Treliving.
Peter adds the incident was made in a “moment of frustration and does not reflect my personal values.”

In another stunning development, Peters was also accused of punching and kicking players while he was in Carolina.
The NHL has a lot of work to do.
