Boston Bruins’ captain Brad Marchand welcomed Chicago Blackhawks’ rookie phenom Connor Bedard to the NHL like only Brad Marchand could.
One day after leading Chicago to a stunning 4-2 road win on opening night over Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins, Bedard and his Blackhawks made the trip to Beantown for a showdown with the Boston Bruins.
In his debut as the Bruins’ captain, Marchand wasted no time trying to get under the skin of the first overall pick. The 2011 Stanley Cup champion tied up Bedard all the way to the Boston bench until an official separated them.
And as you could see, Bedard was in no mood to engage in a scrum with hockey’s greatest pest.
Bedard scored his first career goal at the 5:37 mark of the first period on a wraparound, with Taylor Hall and Ryan Donato drawing the assists. Boston’s Trent Frederic tied it up later in the period.
Marchand was named the new captain of the Bruins following the retirement of Patrice Bergeron, who had donned the “C” since 2020-21. Marchand has been on the B’s roster since 2009-10.

The Blackhawks were the lucky winners of this year’s draft lottery and selected Bedard, who’s considered the best prospect since Connor McDavid. The latter was taken first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in 2015, and he has since asserted himself as the best player on the planet.
