Over the last several years, fighting in hockey has been way down as teams tend to build their lineups with more skill and speed rather than with pure muscle and power. Gone are the days where a team would roster a player just for his ability to fight.
Even with that said, there will always be a place on a hockey team for a tough, hard nosed player who is willing to drop the gloves and stand up for himself or a teammate. On Friday night, in an AHL game between the Manitoba Moose and the Calgary Wranglers, center Alex Gallant of the Wranglers and Manitoba’s left winger Jeffrey Viel threw down in one of the best hockey fights seen in quite some time.
Although the fight lasted less than thirty seconds, the amount of huge haymakers that were thrown and landed is reminiscent to hockey fights that we were used to seeing on a regular basis in the 80’s and 90’s.

Calgary went on to win the game 4-2. These two teams will square off once again on Sunday, with many hockey and fighting fans hoping to see Round 2 between Gallant and Viel.
