The Detroit Lions will be without one of their running backs for the remainder of the year.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, second-year running back Zonovan “Bam” Knight is out for the year after suffering a shoulder injury in Sunday’s 42-24 blowout win over the Carolina Panthers.
The former NC State standout went undrafted in 2022 before signing with the New York Jets. The 5-foot-10 Knight rushed for 300 yards and a touchdown in his rookie year while adding 13 receptions for 100 receiving yards.
In his limited action with the Lions, Knight saw three carries for 13 yards to go along with one eight-yard reception. The Lions’ backfield is led by newcomers David Montgomery (signed in free agency) and first-round pick and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs.
Montgomery has powered the Lions’ backfield with 371 rushing yards and six touchdowns through the Lions’ first five games. Montgomery, who posted a career-high 1,070 rushing yards in 2020, is on pace for his best season yet.
Dan Campbell’s Lions have been one of the main feel-good stories here in 2023. The Lions look poised to end a seven-year playoff drought, and they’re already in good position to lock down the franchise’s first division title since 1993.
