Arizona Cardinals’ linebacker Zaven Collins fortunately avoided a serious eye injury in Sunday’s Week 3 home win against the Dallas Cowboys. But the recovery process, as described by the third-year linebacker, sounded awfully terrifying.
Collins left the game in the third quarter after getting poked in the eye. On Wednesday, head coach Jonathan Gannon stated that Collins will play in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers, and that he’ll wear a visor for protection.
While speaking to the media on Thursday, Collins detailed the horrifying experience with his eye. The 24-year-old went to see doctors, who told him that they hadn’t come across an injury like that before.
“I looked in the mirror, I did not like what I saw,” Collins said, via Bo Brack. “This eye was straight, this eye was like pointing straight up in the air.”
Fortunately, Collins’ vision came back to normal soon after. And since he’ll be wearing a visor on Sunday, the Cardinals’ 2021 first-round pick won’t have to worry about suffering a similar injury.

Arizona’s 28-16 home win over the previously undefeated Cowboys serves as the biggest upset of the young 2023 NFL season. In the win, Collins himself had two tackles and a sack on Dak Prescott.
So far in 2023, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound Collins has seven total tackles, 1.5 sacks and an interception. At this rate, he’s easily on pace to put together the best season of his young NFL career.
The Cardinals will try to improve to 2-2 on the season when they visit the NFC West rival and 3-0 San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium.
