The injury bug has already hit the New York Jets hard, as starting quarterback Zach Wilson will miss at least three weeks with his knee injury.
Per ESPN’s Rich Cimini, Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced on Wednesday that Wilson won’t return until the Jets’ Week 4 road contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers “at the earliest.” Joe Flacco will get the start in Week 1, fittingly against his old team in the Baltimore Ravens.
The No. 2 pick of the 2021 NFL Draft underwent knee surgery in August after suffering an injury against the Philadelphia Eagles during the Aug. 12 preseason contest. Flacco has started five games for the Jets over the last two seasons, performing admirably well with nine touchdowns against only three interceptions.
A sprained PCL caused Wilson to miss four games in his rookie season. Wilson went 3-10 as the starter last year, completing 55.6 percent of his pass attempts for nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Flacco was drafted 18th overall by the Ravens in 2008. He compiled a superb 96-67 regular season record and led the Ravens to three AFC Championship Game appearances and a Super Bowl 47 victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Flacco earned Super Bowl MVP honors.
After hosting the Ravens on Sunday, the Jets will travel to Cleveland and take on Jacoby Brissett’s Cleveland Browns. New York will return home for a Week 3 tilt against the reigning AFC Champion Cincinnati Bengals, whom the Jets upset in Week 8 of last season.

The Jets haven’t recorded a winning season since 2015. They also hold the longest active NFL playoff drought, having last qualified in the 2010 season. With Wilson out at least three games, the pressure is on Flacco and the rest of the Jets’ offense to keep this team afloat until the second-year signal-caller returns.
